Background of the Study
Noise pollution, characterized by harmful levels of environmental noise, has become a significant issue in urban areas worldwide, with potential adverse effects on physical and mental health (Bello et al., 2023). In Nasarawa State, rapid urbanization, increased vehicular traffic, and industrial activities have led to rising levels of noise pollution, particularly in cities like Lafia and Karu (Umaru & Sani, 2024). Noise pollution has been linked to a range of negative health outcomes, including hearing impairment, cardiovascular diseases, sleep disturbances, and stress-related disorders (Ibrahim & Adebayo, 2025). However, its impact on mental health is often overlooked in environmental health studies, despite mounting evidence of the association between chronic noise exposure and psychological distress.

Chronic exposure to high levels of noise is known to induce a state of constant stress, which can impair cognitive functioning and emotional well-being. In Nasarawa State, noise pollution from transportation, construction activities, and industrial plants is a growing concern, particularly in urban areas (Olatunji et al., 2024). Increased noise levels may contribute to the rising cases of anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders observed in the state, yet there is limited research on the psychological effects of noise exposure in this context.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between noise pollution and mental health in Nasarawa State, focusing on the prevalence of stress, anxiety, and depression in individuals exposed to high levels of noise. The study will examine how noise pollution influences mental health outcomes and explore potential interventions to mitigate its impact.

Statement of the Problem
Noise pollution is a growing concern in Nasarawa State, yet the mental health effects of exposure to chronic noise have not been extensively studied. As urbanization and industrial activities increase, understanding the impact of noise pollution on mental health becomes essential for developing strategies to improve public health and well-being in the state.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of noise pollution on mental health outcomes in Nasarawa State.
  2. To examine the relationship between noise exposure and stress, anxiety, and depression in Nasarawa State.
  3. To recommend strategies for mitigating the effects of noise pollution on mental health in Nasarawa State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the relationship between noise pollution and mental health outcomes in Nasarawa State?
  2. How does exposure to noise pollution contribute to stress, anxiety, and depression in Nasarawa State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce the impact of noise pollution on mental health in Nasarawa State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Noise pollution is significantly associated with adverse mental health outcomes, including stress, anxiety, and depression, in Nasarawa State.
  2. Individuals exposed to higher levels of noise pollution report higher levels of psychological distress in Nasarawa State.
  3. Implementing noise control measures will significantly reduce the negative effects of noise pollution on mental health in Nasarawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on urban and peri-urban areas of Nasarawa State, where noise pollution is most prevalent. Limitations include potential challenges in accurately measuring noise levels and in isolating noise exposure from other environmental stressors that may also affect mental health.

Definitions of Terms

  • Noise Pollution: Harmful or disturbing levels of environmental noise that can adversely affect human health.
  • Mental Health: A person’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being, affecting how they think, feel, and behave.
  • Psychological Distress: A state of emotional suffering characterized by symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress.
